Part of modern day Hawaiian culture, ʻohana means family in an extended sense of the term. Being part of a 'Ohana means there is a strong relationship, support and care.
Oddly, 'ohana is not an ancient Hawaiian word. Research shows it was first used in print around 1830 and more often used in Hawaii in the 1950s. It gained its most popularity in the 1970.
'Ohana is today regarded as a core concept in Hawaiian culture. The concept emphasizes that families are bound together and members must cooperate and remember one another.
